Logistics Nerve Center on Pakkalantie in Vantaa

Assistor Oy Ab, specializing in automotive spare parts and material deliveries, is a logistics company that ensures timely supply deliveries for its customers not only in Finland but also in the Baltic countries and Sweden. The nerve center of this dynamic and growing operation is located on Pakkalantie in Vantaa, near the airport area.

"Our logistics center and company administration are located here," says Business Manager Jukka Niemelä. "Goods move around the clock from Monday to Friday, with weekends being a bit quieter."

The electrification of the car fleet does not slow growth

Assistor has a total of 16,500 square meters of space at its disposal, with an average of 70 staff members present daily. The company's turnover, part of the Veho automotive group, is steadily increasing, and this trend is not expected to change anytime soon.

The entire lighting system was renewed

With a large area, the property requires good maintenance to prevent energy consumption from getting out of hand. Kari Niemi, the property manager at Ecoreal Oy, is responsible for a total of six logistics centers across Finland, one of which is Assistor's center.

"The fluorescent tubes installed ten years ago had reached the end of their lifecycle. They consumed energy and their lighting efficiency was poor," Niemi explains. "We initially considered just replacing the light sources, meaning LED tubes would have been installed instead of fluorescent tubes. But when we expanded our considerations to include the lifespan of the fixtures, electricity consumption, and lighting quality, it was deemed most sensible to renew the entire lighting system."

  • "I heard nothing but good things about the company. And right when making the agreement, I was convinced – sitting across the table was someone who was genuinely interested in users' needs," Kari Niemi describes the progress of the process. "The entire installation crew, starting from the site manager, carried out their work with quality and precision from start to finish."

Greenled won the tough competition

The selection process considered a wide range of factors.

“There is fierce competition among suppliers nowadays, and there are many providers of lighting systems,” says Kari Niemi. “When making the choice, warranty and delivery times, experiences of other users, and proposal materials were emphasized... And ultimately, the overall package was decisive. Price was never the only determining factor.”

The choice fell on Greenled.

“I heard only good things about the company. And as soon as we made the agreement, I was convinced – the person sitting across the table was genuinely interested in the users' needs,” describes Kari Niemi of the process. “The entire installation team, from the site manager onwards, did their work with quality and precision from start to finish.”

Installations smoothly integrated into the 24/7 schedule

When there is activity in the property around the clock, it poses its own challenges for the installation project.

“Our operations were not disrupted at any point,” Jukka Niemelä praises. “Communication worked well, and the installations were scheduled to fit in with the center's busy times.”

The new lighting system was implemented in February of this year, so there is only limited data available on the reduction in energy consumption.

“The trend was already seen in the first electricity bill,” Niemelä reports. “The change is significant.”

Huge savings and increased well-being

When light sources are replaced with energy-efficient LED lights and a DALI control system ensures that lights are not unnecessarily on, significant savings are achieved.

“The annual reduction in energy consumption in Assistor's case is over 650,000 kilowatt-hours,” says Greenled's key account manager Jani Ormaa. “The calculated savings, taking into account lower maintenance costs and lamp replacements, is over 130,000 euros per year in this case.”

Equally important as the saved euros is people's well-being.

“The old lighting, especially in the warehouse area, was already dim and yellowish,” describes Jukka Niemelä. “It's a matter of both work safety and comfort. The new lighting has been noticed and received with thanks throughout the building. The adjustability of the lighting also receives praise, as too much would be too much. Despite the brightness, the lighting should not dazzle.”

LEED certification reflects overall responsibility.

Assistor's sustainability program emphasizes the importance of both environmental and human well-being in the company's business. The ecological lighting system is a factor that considers both. Almost simultaneously with the renewal of the lighting system, the property was granted LEED EB Gold certification.

"The renewal of the lighting system was already known when applying for certification, even though it didn't directly impact its acquisition. But it's better this way; we have kind of already exceeded the efficiency requirements set by the certification," reflects Kari Niemi.

"We want to convey the principles of responsible business to our entire customer and partner network," says Jukka Niemelä. "A responsibly chosen lighting system is part of this whole."
