Initial Situation

Huhtamäki is a global expert in food and beverage packaging. Headquartered in Espoo, the company operates 78 production facilities and 24 sales offices across 34 countries. Huhtamäki Foodservice Nordic Oy's production facility and logistics center are located in Hämeenlinna.

The Hämeenlinna logistics center is a high-storage warehouse with numerous long aisles. In addition to the warehouse space, there is a separate loading area. In 2017, the facility was illuminated with high-pressure sodium lamps and fluorescent tubes, with light levels varying between 143 and 300 lux.

Although some areas had sufficient lighting, the levels were inconsistent, and the lighting solution did not optimally support work tasks. Employees struggled to read text clearly, and the lights caused disruptive glare. Another challenge was the uneven lighting between different work phases.

The lighting system also fell short in terms of energy efficiency. Without lighting control, the lights operated at full power continuously. Ideally, lighting should be active only where movement occurs and work is being performed at any given moment.

Customer Vision

As the old lighting system neared the end of its lifecycle, Huhtamäki decided to upgrade the lighting in its logistics facility. The goals of implementing modern LED lighting and lighting control were to:

Intelligent Lighting Solution

Greenled’s lighting solution was a smart, comprehensive system that focused on lighting design, high-quality luminaires, and advanced lighting control.

The warehouse’s high-pressure sodium lamps were replaced with Greenled’s Omega luminaires, while the loading dock’s fluorescent tubes were upgraded to Gamma luminaires. The new lighting levels in the logistics facilities now meet EU standards, ensuring sufficient illumination for work tasks.

The choice of optics for the luminaires took into account both the height of the space and the long aisles. The vertical surfaces of the shelves were illuminated more brightly than before, while glare was minimized. As a result, overall lighting levels have improved, and the light color is more pleasant. Previously, employees struggled to read text under the orange light—now, both forklift operators and supervisors report their satisfaction with the upgrade.

In addition to the luminaires, the logistics facilities were equipped with motion sensors that automatically turn the lights on and off based on space usage. Presence detection significantly contributes to energy savings, as many aisle sections have varying usage rates. At best, presence detection has resulted in an additional 50% savings in less frequently used aisles.

Greenled also installed the OSRAM ENCELIUM™ lighting management system for the customer. Huhtamäki chose the ENCELIUM™ system because it allows lighting adjustments through the Polaris 3D software’s visual interface and provides detailed energy consumption reports. The ENCELIUM system simplifies lighting system usage and analysis while enabling remote lighting management.

Compared to the previous lighting system, the new LED luminaires have provided 66.15% energy savings for Huhtamäki. Additionally, motion detection has contributed an extra 21.98% in savings. In total, the new lighting solution at the Hämeenlinna logistics center has achieved an 88.13% reduction in energy consumption.
