Office lighting renovation – Aiming to enhance the work environment

Tecwill Oy embarked on a comprehensive renovation of their office spaces with the goal of improving employee well-being. A key aspect of enhancing workplace wellness was seen in the design of lighting that supports employees' daily rhythms, thereby boosting their overall well-being.

Following the lighting renovation of the production facilities, the aim in 2023 was to also update the office lighting as part of a larger office renovation.

"In 2023, we wanted to focus on improving the work environment in our office spaces. The renovation included updating all surfaces, most of the furniture, and the entire lighting system. Additionally, we enhanced the acoustic environment by adding plenty of acoustic panels to the walls. To further support employee well-being, we also arranged spaces and equipment for break-time exercise," summarizes Timo Ryhänen.

Ryhänen further notes, "For the lighting renovation, we chose the leading domestic supplier, Greenled Oy"

"We began our cooperation with Greenled six years ago, when Greenled designed and implemented a lighting upgrade for our production facilities. Our goal was to improve occupational safety and efficiency by increasing the lighting level to over 700 lux, while also saving energy with modern LED luminaires controlled by constant light and motion sensors. Compared to the previous solution, this investment has already paid for itself several times over through energy savings alone."

In the project, the lighting designer role was handled by Kalle Lumila from Greenled, who was positively surprised by the client’s willingness to prioritise good and high-quality lighting in the facility.

“From a designer’s perspective, this project was exceptional in the sense that the client primarily wanted good, high-quality lighting, and the project was not strictly driven by cost. The client was well-informed and understood the impact of good lighting on people and the environment,” Lumila explains.

For lighting control, a wireless Casambi system was selected. Thanks to this solution, lighting scenarios can be adjusted and customised wirelessly via a tablet, using parameters from the sensors integrated into the luminaires.

When using an intelligent control system like this, it is wise from a lifecycle cost perspective to choose luminaires with sufficient power reserves. In this project, the basic lighting level is typically reached at around 50% power output on an annual average. This extends the lifetime of the luminaires and also offers flexibility for the future—for example, allowing task-specific lighting levels to be increased if needed, such as when employees get older.

Juha Leiviskä from Greenled, who served as the installation manager for the project, praises the client for the smooth execution of the project.

“The lighting renovation at Tecwill Oy’s office premises was an interesting project that challenged our installers, installation manager, and programmer alike. The best part was being able to fully leverage the benefits of wireless Casambi control and provide the staff with practical, human-centric lighting,” says Leiviskä.

He also adds: “Communication with Tecwill Oy’s staff during the implementation phase went excellently, which allowed us to carry out many aspects related to accessible installation together and on schedule. The user training also went very well, and we expect that the client will be able to make lighting adjustments independently at the beginning of the darker season. Still, we’ve ensured that remote support is readily available.”
