Elgiganten Logistics Torsvik

Elgiganten is one of the Nordic region's largest players in consumer electronics and home appliances – with a logistics operation that supplies both stores and e-commerce customers across the entire region every day.

When the company built its new central warehouse in Torsvik, Jönköping, the goal was crystal clear: an energy-efficient, future-proof, and optimized lighting solution capable of 24/7 operation.

Following the successful LED conversion at Elgiganten’s first central warehouse in 2020, Greenled was a clear choice for the partner once again, this time as a subcontractor to Magnus Setterlind, S.O EL, and  with responsibility for a complete turnkey assignment for all lighting in the new 90,000 m² facility, corresponding to approximately 18 football fields.

Project Facts:

  • Client: Elgiganten AB

  • Location: Torsvik, Jönköping

  • Area: 90,000 m² (approx. 18 football fields)

  • Number of luminaires: 2,000 Omega Linear Gen2 147W, medium optics

  • Sensors: approx. 200

  • System: Encelium X lighting control

  • Type of project: Turnkey (design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning)

  • Energy savings: approx. 60–70 % compared to the previous solution

The Goals of the Project

Elgiganten needed a sustainable and reliable lighting system capable of handling the pace of a modern, highly automated central warehouse. The focus was on three things:

  • High lighting comfort and safety for forklift drivers

  • Smart and energy-efficient control via sensors

  • Simple service and long technical lifespan

Greenled's role was to take overall responsibility for the lighting – design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. In short: from the first drawing to a finished and functioning solution on site.

  • “This is lighting excecution at the highest level – intelligent, demand-driven, and future-proof..”

Kalle Lumila Lighting Designer, Greenled Oy
  • The first switch-on is always magical. Suddenly you see the entire volume – interior, aisles, shelves – everything bathed in light. It is the moment when the vision becomes reality.

    Joel Enetorp Sales Director, Greenled
  • Our installers were fantastic. In three months, they put up 2,000 luminaires and 200 sensors – with millimeter precision, 12 meters up in the air. It requires focus, planning, and real finesse.

Asko Puhakka Senior Project Manager, Greenled

Project Scope

The project included the installation of approximately 2,000 Omega Linear Gen2 147 W LED luminaires with medium optics – chosen for their high light output, energy efficiency, and low glare. In addition, around 200 sensors and two kilometers of cable were mounted at a height of 12 meters, making the solution one of the Nordic region's most advanced logistics lighting systems.

Turnkey – A Holistic Responsibility

Greenled managed the entire chain:

  • Design and light calculation,

  • Manufacturing of luminaires in Finland,

  • Pre-assembly of quick connectors, sensors, and brackets,

  • Installation and programming on site,

  • Commissioning and optimization via the Encelium X control system.

With Encelium X, the light can be controlled by zone via 200 ceiling-mounted sensors, which optimizes energy consumption and extends the lifespan of the luminaires.

Challenges and Solutions

Construction on this scale requires meticulous planning. The logistics are complex, and the weather sometimes interferes. During the winter, installation must continue even when parts of the building still lack walls – temporary heating tents are then built to protect both personnel and equipment.

Despite the challenges, the project was kept on time, largely thanks to close communication with the construction management and clear delivery plans.

The Result

When the power was switched on for the first time and 90,000 square meters lit up, it was an experience everyone on site remembers.

The new lighting provides:

  • Even light distribution and reduced glare for forklift drivers,

  • Significant energy savings thanks to sensor control,

  • Reduced climate footprint through fewer luminaires and optimized manufacturing,

  • Higher safety and comfort for the staff.

The long design of the Omega Linear Gen2 luminaires (2.4 meters) minimizes the number of units required, saving both installation costs and resources – sustainability in practice.

Summary

Elgiganten's new central warehouse in Torsvik is a textbook example of how modern lighting design, careful planning, and local manufacturing can create enormous results. The project shows that efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand – when the technology and the people behind it work in perfect harmony.
