The city of Helsinki implemented a significant street lighting transformation, emphasizing energy efficiency, lighting quality, and longevity. The project involved replacing 125 W mercury lamps with mainly 18 W Sirius M lamps, which are dimmed at night. This upgrade results in up to 90% energy savings compared to traditional mercury technology.
The city of Helsinki ran a street lighting change according to the Public Procurement Act. Besides energy efficiency, essential criteria also included high colour rendering, vandalism classification, and overvoltage protection. Quality criteria of tenders were reasoned and targeted to luminaires with as long lifespan as possible. There were also specific requirements towards the appearance of the luminaires. Additionally to the procurement price, the pricing criteria also thoughtfully considered the price of energy used by the luminaire as a total price factor. Street lighting renovation project of the city of Helsinki was executed with Greenled Sirius luminaires. The old 125W mercury vapour luminaires were replaced mainly with 18W Sirius M luminaires that are dimmed during the nights. The new street lighting solution enables as much as 90% energy savings when compared to the traditional mercury technology.
