Why is IEC 60068-2-38 a very demanding test?
Origi is in many ways an exceptional LED luminaire. While most LED luminaires, even those designed for professional use, are disposable, Origin has been designed with quality, serviceability and durability in both senses of the word in mind. Origi is also exceptional in that it works virtually indoors and outdoors. In an IEC 60068-2-38 test, Origi was subjected to the conditions required for outdoor lighting:
- Extreme conditions: the test combines high temperature (+65°C) with high humidity (93%) and rapid transitions to cold (-10°C), simulating the "breathing" effect where moisture can penetrate the luminaire due to thermal expansion and contraction. This stresses materials (aluminium, RST, glass dome) and seals (IP65) to the limit.
- Accelerated life cycle: 15 cycles correspond to years of use in varying conditions such as damp tunnels or industrial environments where corrosion and mechanical failures are common risks.
- Comprehensive stress: the test evaluates not only physical durability (corrosion, seal resistance) but also functionality, ensuring that the luminaire maintains its performance.
What happened to Origi?
Origi passed the test with flying colours, maintaining its luminous efficacy, colour temperature and power consumption (54-56 W) without any significant changes.
Even for a professional luminaire, Origi showed exceptional reliability in demanding environments. It is virtually immune to most of the environmental stresses to which it is exposed in typical use.
The innovative and model-protected design is now proven to be unique in many ways. It offers companies a completely exceptional opportunity to take their lighting into a new era. Not only is Origi mechanically robust, but all its consumable parts - LEDs and ballasts - can be easily replaced at the end of their useful life with those widely available in the industry. It is truly the last luminaire a company will need to purchase, and allows for very significant savings in terms of energy consumption, maintenance costs and waste generated.
Quite simply, Origi is now proven to be exactly as sustainable as we promised.
What is Origi suitable for?
It would probably be easier to list the areas where Origi is NOT suitable, because there are hardly any in practice. However, here is a list of applications where exceptional performance is required and where Origi is perfectly suited:
Applications based on the test:
- Industrial and production premises: suitable for halls exposed to high temperatures and humidity, such as metal or food processing industries, where temperature fluctuations and the risk of corrosion are daily challenges.
- Outdoor and public areas: ideal for street lighting, parking areas or public spaces where weather variations (cold, rain, heat) put a strain on luminaires - the test ensures long life without colour fading or electrical failures.
- Suitable for humidenvironments such as washrooms, warehouses or freezer rooms where high humidity (up to 93%) and low temperatures (-10°C) can cause condensation; IP65 sealing and materials can withstand these conditions.
- Energy efficient and environmentally friendly: For use in businesses and the public sector, such as offices or schools, where long-lasting and energy efficient lighting is required under varying indoor conditions.
- Tunnel lighting: excellent for road and rail tunnels where high humidity, temperature variations, salt, dust and chemicals (e.g. vehicle emissions) make extreme demands. The test ensures luminaire reliability, safe visibility and long maintenance-free life, reducing maintenance costs in tunnels.
- Other demanding applications .
What's next?
Based on an independent test, Origi is therefore ideally suited for applications where environmental stresses are severe, such as tunnels, industrial premises and outdoor areas, providing reliable and long-lasting lighting for decades to come. This is exceptional for a luminaire with a cutting-edge design.
