Replacement of Central Warehouse Lighting from Fluorescent to LED Fixtures

The previous fixtures, which were 10 to 12 years old, had already fulfilled their purpose. Therefore, 4,037 old fixtures were replaced with 1,288 modern LED fixtures.

Björn Nord is the construction project manager at G&K Fastigheter, based in Skara. He has assisted Jula Logistics in procuring the new lighting. The large warehouse serves both Jula's stores and the online shop that started in 2018 in Sweden.

-We received six responses to our request for proposals. Three suppliers conducted trial installations, which we evaluated. Each company was allowed to install the lighting in their own forklift aisle, after which we asked our forklift drivers what they thought of the lighting. Based on their choices and the investment costs, the decision fell to Greenled, says Björn Nord.

-We have pallet racks that are 12 meters high, and the most important consideration in the evaluation was the uniformity of lighting, so that there would be good illumination even at the top shelf. Energy savings were, of course, significant as well as ensuring that the investment would pay for itself in a reasonable time frame, specifically 18 to 24 months. However, we believe it will happen even faster, Björn notes. With the installed control system, we can adjust the lighting as needed and measure energy consumption.

The warehouse lighting in the forklift aisle is an oval Omega 119 W, which optimizes lighting in forklift aisles that are 8–14 meters high. The optics ensure that the lights do not blind the forklift operators. Each 175-meter-long forklift aisle in Jula's central warehouse is divided into five sections, and each aisle has five sensors for optimizing energy consumption. When no forklifts are in the aisles, the power of the lights is reduced to 1% or they are turned off completely. The control system is Osram ENCELIUM™.

Joel Enetorp from Greenled explains that this is a turnkey project, which means that Greenled is responsible for the entire project from the initial customer visit through to implementation and maintenance.
